{Artisoft FAX-Facts System}
This menu-driven system will automatically download current sales and
technical bulletins to your fax system. To use the system, call
602-293-1397 from the phone attached to your fax, listen to the menu and
choose up to three faxes per call. The faxes will immediately begin printing
on your fax. A list of currently available sales literature and technical
bulletins follows. Technical bulletins contain details for installating other
vendor's products with LANtastic networks. These bulletins have been
written by Artisoft's Compatibility Department after product testing and
have been reviewed by the vendor of the products for accuracy:

Q: How do I install LANtastic Network Operating System v3.03?
A: As with all LANtastic updates and upgrades, installing this version
over a previous version will not change your network configuration.
All accounts and resources will remain unchanged. This version
MUST be installed on all computers in your network (do not copy
the files from the distribution diskette) since the files are packed
and installing the program will unpack the files.
Q: I installed LANtastic Network Operating System 3.03 and was slightly
confused by the questions the installation program asked me. Now
when I load LANBIOS (or LANBIOS2) it gives me the following error
message: "No LANtastic hardware present at this address..." I
didn't remove or change the hardware and it was working before
I installed LANtastic Network Operating System 3.03.
A: Perhaps you chose LANBIOS.EXE instead of LANBIOS2.EXE to
install (or vice versa) and your adapter cards should be running the
other program. Original LANtastic 2 Mbps adapters must run
LANBIOS.EXE LANtastic 2 Mbps Micro Channel Adapters must run
LANBIOS.EXE LANtastic Enhanced 2 Mbps adapters must run
LANBIOS2.EXE
Q: I chose the wrong driver during the installation program. How do I
copy the correct program from the installation disk?
A: Default to the A: (or B:) drive. Type A: and press enter and then
type the following:
A:>Install unpack C:\lantasti\lanbios.EXE
(or desired file)
The above command will unpack LANBIOS.EXE and place it in the
C:\LANTASTI directory
Q: What is the XEROX switch that AE2.EXE, NE3.EXE and WD8003.EXE
versions 1.15 and higher support?
A: AE2.EXE, NE3.EXE and WD8003.EXE versions 1.15 and higher now
support the XEROX switch. This is significant in installations where
other networking packets are being passed on the same cabling
as LANtastic. The XEROX switch prevents some other network
programs from confusing LANtastic Network packets with their own
network packets. One network program that we know is confused
without the XEROX switch is Hewlett Packard's Advancenet for the
HP 3000.
Q: What does the LANtastic Network Operating System v3.03
README.DOC mean when it says that LANcache v.1.31 solves
problems with bad sectors on my drive?
A: LANcache caches a whole track of data. On previous versions, if a
request was made to read data from a track that had a bad sector
marked not to be used, then LANcache could not properly read the
other sectors on the same track.
Q: LANcache v1.31 will display a warning message if you try to cache
drives larger than 65535 tracks. What size in Megabytes are drives
that have 65535 tracks?
A: This depends on the low-level formatting utility that formatted the
drives. The way to tell if LANcache will cache the whole drive in
question is to take the number of tracks times the number of
sectors per track times 512 (LANcache caches only drives that
format 512-byte sectors). This will give you the size of the drive in
Megabytes.
Q: The LANtastic Network Operating System v3.03 README.DOC refers
to the fact that LANcache now works correctly with programs that
create non-standard partition tables for boot-up security. What is
a program that creates a non-standard partition table?
A: This is a program used to secure a PC from tampering by other
users. It is a software-only way to protect your PC's data. Programs
like this create a partition table that cannot be read by DOS. There
is a program in the computer's CONFIG.SYS file that is read when
the computer boots that tells DOS, upon entering a password, how
to read the partition table, so that files can be read and saved back
to disk. This is not the same as network security, but a way to stop
someone who doesn't know the password from using any
computer on or off a network. One program we know that provides
this type of security is PC-VAULT.
Q: Why does LANcache support the SERVER SHUTDOWN_KEY=
switch? I don't see anything in the Server Shutdown Menu about
LANcache.
A: LANcache intercepts CTRL-ALT-DEL so that it can flush the cache to
disk before rebooting (this is true even if SERVER isn't running).
Some software, like old versions of 386MAX, interfere with this
interception, so an alternate reboot hot-key is provided. When
CTRL-ALT-(key) is activated to shut down a server, this also flushes
the LANcache buffer. This also occurs when CTRL-ALT-(key) is
pressed without the server loaded.
Q: Why do I get "Btrieve Error 84" when running my application over
LANtastic Network Operating System v3.02, but it works fine at the
server or if I use LANtastic Network Operating System v3.00 or
earlier?
A: The source of the problem is DOS 3.3's SHARE.EXE. When an
application wants to flush buffers to disk, it does it in one of two
ways: by duplicating the file handle (INT 21 function 45h) and then
closing the duplicate file handle (INT 21 function 3Eh) or by using
the commit file call (INT 21 function 68h). The duplicate/close
method was used exclusively before the flush buffer call was added
in DOS 3.3. Since there is the possibility of having different DOS
versions on different machines, LANtastic converts all flush buffer
calls on the workstation to duplicate/close calls on the server. The
problem comes up when SHARE erroneously clears the locks on
the ORIGINAL file when the duplicate file handle is closed. The
problem can be resolved by using MS DOS 4.01 (not PC DOS 4.0)
on the server because SHARE was fixed, or upgrading to LANtastic
Network Operation System v3.03. SERVER.EXE v3.03 was modified
so that it checks the version of DOS running on the server, and will
not convert the duplicate/close calls if DOS 3.3 or higher is present.
